The racism argument around the setting
A slice of Steam discussion says the game’s Kolkata scam-call setting makes a joke out of Indian workers. Other players say it is a broad comedy about the scam-call industry and that the targets are the scammers. There is no publisher statement in the pages I checked that settles it.
What I checked
I read the Steam discussion thread 588438602972063550 and the English review sample’s complaints, plus Coop-Land’s 19 October note that the argument exists. I did not get a usable Reddit thread, because the public JSON was a login wall. I am not quoting slurs, and I am not scoring which side “won.” The sample of angry posts is small next to 1,977 English-store reviews.
What the game itself puts on screen
The store text sets the office in Kolkata and asks you to run a scam floor. The official capsule art and screenshots show a cartoon office, not a documentary. Hindi is one of the 23 fully voiced languages, which some players read as flavor and others read as part of the same stereotype. I can confirm the language list. I cannot confirm intent.
The two readings, as posted
The critical reading, in that Steam thread and in a minority of negative reviews, is that a real-world crime associated in the press with Indian call centers is being played for laughs, with accents and a city name doing the work of a punchline. People in that camp ask for the setting to change or for the game to be clearer that the joke is the industry, not a nationality.
The defensive reading, also in the reviews, is that scam call centers are a known script, the callers in this game are AI marks rather than a nationality tutorial, and a comedy is allowed to be ugly. Those posts treat the outrage as a misread of a game that also lets you get fired, hacked, and virus-bombed.
The publisher site and the nine Steam news posts I read talk about wishlists, voice models, lobbies, and achievements. They do not contain a response to the stereotype charge. Until that exists, “the developers apologized” or “the developers refused” would be fiction.
FAQ
Is the game racist?
That is the argument players are having. This page records the setting the store chose and the two readings. It does not issue a verdict.
Did the developers respond?
Not in the official page or the Steam news items checked on 22 October 2026.
Should I skip the game because of this?
That is your call. The price and refund window are on the price page if you want a low-risk way to look.
