How the AI callers work
The callers are AI characters, not other players. Speech recognition is described as running on your PC. The text of the conversation can be sent to model providers. Those two sentences are the whole privacy story, and they are easy to mix up.
What I checked
I read the publisher privacy policy dated 17 October 2026 and the EULA beside Hotfix 2 and the 0.1.82 speech note. I am not claiming a model version number, because the documents name providers and local engines, not a single pinned model build. Caller personalities you invent are a Workshop item, not a private file that stays only on your disk.
What stays on the PC
The privacy policy says speech recognition runs locally. Patch notes name Whisper and a fallback called Moonshine. Update 0.1.82 picks Moonshine when the PC lacks AVX2 or when Whisper fails or times out, with a 15-second limit and a clearer timeout message. Hotfix 2 says typed dialogue remains available if speech will not start, and it mentions fixes for stalled caller voices and Qwen3 startup.
Call audio you choose to save lands in Documents\Scam With Your Friends\Videos. Turning call saving off still keeps a temporary recording for the boss review, according to the same policy. I cannot confirm from here whether a process keeps recording after you quit. Players have said that. The policy does not.
What leaves the PC
The policy says the text of AI conversations is sent to DeepSeek or OpenRouter, and that those providers may retain it and use it for training. Custom callers sync to the Steam Workshop. The in-game browser is a real browser. The EULA is the contract for that, version 2026-10-17.1.
Voice cloning shows up in community guides and in the feature list people repeat. I will not describe a cloning workflow step by step, because the official text I have is about recognition engines and Workshop sync, not a published cloning manual.
FAQ
Are the callers other players?
No. They are AI characters. The humans in the lobby are the operators, up to eight of you.
Does the mic audio get uploaded?
The policy says recognition runs on the PC, and that conversation text can be sent to DeepSeek or OpenRouter. Read the policy before you assume the raw mic stream stays local.
Can I play without talking?
Hotfix 2 says typed dialogue remains available when speech recognition will not start.
